"I do not know why I should apologise to her, as I have read that Jadranka Kosor, and this has not been denied, is proud of being called Mather Theresa and Suzana," Mesic said on Friday in Zagreb.
The name Suzana is seen as a pun in this case given that 'suza' in Croatian means a tear and the nickname 'Suzana' for Kosor alludes that she is inclined to shed tears in public.
Earlier in the day Kosor accused Mesic of making sexist comments on her and complained that he had not still offer an apology to her.
After unveiling a bust of a former soccer player, the late Mirko Braun-Charli, in front of his cafe 'Charlie' in downtown Zagreb, Mesic also commented on the 'ubiquitous' presence of Kosor's posters and advertising clips on TV and radio.
In this context, Mesic expressed doubt that the total costs of the HDZ candidate's campaign would be only three million kuna, what her party claimed.
"All of this can cost some 20 million kuna," Mesic assessed.
Asked whether he believed in his victory in the first round of the polls, Mesic answered that it was up to citizens to decide.
"But, if they can calculate (costs), it would be better not to make additional costs," Mesic said, implying that it was up to citizens to go to the polls and vote for him so that he can win over 50 percent in the first round, which would render the run-off unnecessary.
