ZADAR, Dec 20 (Hina) - Davor Aras, a former Croatian Democratic Union
(HDZ) member from Zadar who was recently ousted from the party for taking part
in a meeting of WWII Home Guard members marked by a display of Ustasha
insignia, will remain at the post of Zadar City Council chairman after HDZ
councillors on Monday refused a motion by Social Democrat (SDP) councillors to
replace Aras as City Council chairman.HDZ councillors underlined Aras's contribution to the development of
democracy, stating that his ouster from the party was no reason to replace him
as chairman of the City Council.
After the SDP's proposal was refused, some opposition councillors walked
out of the session.
City Council deputy chairman Zvonimir Vrancic of the HDZ accused the
city opposition and some media of the latest events in Zadar. "It is you who
write the (fascist) graffiti and wait to take pictures of them," he said,
claiming that Aras had been framed.
