ZAGREB, Dec 2 (Hina) - Clubs of parliamentary deputies of two leading opposition parties -- the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Peasant Party (HSS) -- on Thursday presented a resolution on basic principles for Croatia's admission to the European Union, which would be sent into parliamentary procedure with the aim of protecting Croatian values and interests and strengthening the negotiating position of the Croatian government during talks on the country's full membership in the European bloc.

Presenting the resolution, Neven Mimica of the SDP told a news conference in the Sabor that the country should strengthen the entire political and social action so as to complete the entry talks successfully.

The SDP and the HSS have drawn up a resolution which promotes the protection of the Croatian identity, tradition and culture during the accession negotiations with the EU. According to the document Croatia should be on the equal footing with the EU during the negotiations .

Mimica said that the incumbent government and its negotiation team should be aware that during the negotiations they can count on the full support of the national parliament and citizens.

Parliament is the place where each chapter of the negotiations programme should be discussed, Mimica said.

He, however, criticised some segments of the European policy of the incumbent government. He complained that 2004 was lost for Croatia regarding economic reforms, plans for the adjustment of the national legislation to EU standards and plans to establish a national negotiating team.

Mimica said the positive side of the policy was the fact that earlier this year Croatia was granted the status of candidate country.

Although another opposition party, the Croatian People's Party (HNS), was expected to join the HSS and the SDP in moving the resolution, the party reported that it had just recently received its text and it needed some more time to harmonise its views.
