Parliament speaker calls for uniting efforts to challenge tribunal's ruling

Autor: mses
JASENOVAC, April 17 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament Speaker Luka Bebic has said that it will be now important to engage legal and political experts in efforts to challenge Friday's judgement of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in case of Croatian generals and the allegations about a joint criminal enterprise which he finds to be also a verdict against the entire country.

It is a non-final ruling and although I do not comment on rulings pending appeal, this one includes political allegations and issues, Bebic said on Sunday after a commemoration to the WW II Jasenovac concentration camp.

Asked by reporters whether the lengthy sentences delivered against Generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac would affect the forthcoming parliamentary elections and a referendum on Croatia's prospective entry into the European Union, Bebic said that he hoped that the currently emotionally-charged situation would stabilise.

"There are six to seven months before the elections," he said adding that he hoped that the situation would stabilise by then and that a final ruling was a precondition for the defusing of the situation.

According to some opinion polls, the latest developments have led to the melting of a pro-EU sentiment in Croatia.
