EC says Croatia's cooperation with ICTY remains crucial

Autor: mses
BRUSSELS, April 15 (Hina) - After the Hague-based UN tribunal rendered verdicts in the case of Croatian generals Ante Gotovina, Mladen Markac and Ivan Cermak on Friday, the European Commission stated that it expected Croatia to continue fully cooperating with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

Full cooperation with the Hague tribunal remains crucial for closing the policy area on the judiciary, sources in Brussels were quoted by the Slovenian STA news agency.

The tribunal sentenced General Gotovina to 24 years and General Markac to 18 years in prison, acquitting General Cermak.

The European Commission takes note of today's judgement and the fact that it is subject to appeal, said Natasha Butler, spokeswoman for European Union Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele.

The Commission finds the work of the tribunal to be important and it sympathises with all war victims and their families, Butler said.

Healing wounds takes time, the spokeswoman said, adding that Brussels hopes that Croatia will look forward to the future in the spirit of patience, reconciliation and progress on its road towards EU membership.
