Zagreb police spokesperson Gordana Vulama said that the police had pressed charges "on the basis of information which was backed by certain documents, provided by security services".
She would not reveal other details or state concrete allegations against the two former officials.
Vulama had no comment on numerous questions by the press, including the question of how Prime Minister Ivo Sanader could know yesterday that the police had pressed charges against Bagic and Turek since she told some reporters last night that she had no such information. Asked why the police today revealed the identity of the suspects, contrary to their standard procedure to only reveal suspects' initials, Vulama said that the public already knew the identity of the suspects.
The police spokesperson would not disclose any other details about the case and referred reporters to the Public Prosecutor's Office.
The press could not obtain any information at the office of Chief State Prosecutor Mladen Bajic today.
Information about the charges against Bagic and Turek was published last night when Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said that he would not co-sign a proposal by President Stjepan Mesic to relieve of duty POA director Josko Podbevsek. Sanader said that Mesic's proposal was the result of the fact that the POA had presented reports to the Zagreb police which served as a basis for pressing charges against Bagic and Turek.
President Mesic yesterday received Podbevsek and expressed dissatisfaction with the POA's behaviour and the way it collected information from reporter Helena Puljiz, after which his office released a statement saying that Mesic co-signed a decision to relieve Podbevsek of duty and sent it to PM Sanader to co-sign it.
