Gorsic has said in an interview he has granted to the latest issue of the official newspaper of the Defence Ministry that there are plans for downsizing the defence sector this year by a total of 4,886 persons, including 3,886 active military staffers and 1,000 civil servants.
The purpose of the reorganisation and the downsizing is to form an army with younger and better trained and educated employees.
Thus, the average age of military servicemen has fallen from 35 to 33, which still makes Croatian soldiers 'older' than what is the standard in western countries.
Gorsic said that the cut in the number of the staff also led to the better educational structure of officers, as now there were 37 percent of those with inadequate education as against the previous 53 percent. There are 12 percent of high-ranking officers with lower school degree than required.
