ZAGREB, Nov 5 (Hina) - From 1991 to mid-September 2004 a total of
3,540 war crimes proceedings were launched in Croatia, 1,441 persons were
charged, 593 were convicted, while 292 were acquitted, according to figures
deputy chief state prosecutor Slavko Zadnik presented at a seminar for law
students on Friday.Zadnik said the figures changed by the day given that trials held
without the presence of the accused were being reviewed. He added such trials
were "counterproductive" and damaging because the international community
doubted their objectivity and the independence of national courts.
The seminar was organised by the Citizens Committee on Human Rights.
