Karlovac County Police spokesman Tomislav Kotic told Hina the police were investigating when the plaque was placed and by whom.
Government spokesman Ratko Macek told the press the Government most vehemently condemned the setting of a new monument honouring Francetic. He said the Slunj Town Authorities and the Environmental Protection, Zoning and Construction Ministry would be asked to react immediately.
A monument honouring Francetic was first erected in a Slunj square in June 2000, at the initiative of a Croatian emigrant. It was removed in August 2004 following a Government decision.
People living in the square said the new plaque was placed last Monday or Tuesday, and that up to 20 people came every day to light candles and put flowers.
Deputy Mayor Franjo Vucer, of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union party, said he had not heard anything about the new plaque, adding he was angry at the press for being interested only in memorial plaques and nothing else in Slunj.
