ICTY sentences generals Gotovina and Markac, acquits Cermak

Autor: mses
THE HAGUE, April 15 (Hina) - The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on Friday sentenced General Ante Gotovina to 24 years in prison and General Mladen Markac to 18 years in prison for their participation in a joint criminal enterprise, the aim of which was to forcibly and permanently remove the Serb population from occupied areas of Croatia during and after Operation Storm, launched on August 4, 1995. The Hague tribunal acquitted the third Croatian general in this case, Ivan Cermak.

Gotovina and Markac were found guilty of persecution, deportation, plunder of property, wanton destruction, murder and inhumane acts, and were acquitted of forcible transfer.

In their closing statements in August 2010, prosecutors recommended that Gotovina be sentenced to 27 years in prison, Markac to 23 years and Cermak to 17 years, while the defence called upon the trial chamber to acquit their clients on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to prove their guilt on any of the counts of the indictment.

The trial opened on March 11, 2008. Cermak and Markac have been in the custody of the Hague tribunal since March 11, 2004 and Gotovina since December 10, 2005.

The verdicts can be appealed.
