"We have not received any request for the renewal of the proceedings," Sisak County Court president Danko Kovac said and added that this court was the only place where Mikelic could ask for a retrial.
Hina was not able to get information at the Justice Ministry whether Mikelic had formally requested the renewal of the proceedings, as one daily wrote on Tuesday. Justice Minister Vesna Skare Ozbolt was not available to give a statement and spokeswoman for the ministry Vesna Dovranic said she was not familiar with the case and added she would be able to say more tomorrow.
Mikelic, former director of the Petrinja-based Gavrilovic food-processing company, was convicted in 1993 of war crimes against civilians and for organising a rebellion. He was tried in absentia and a warrant for his arrest had been issued.
In April 1994 he became the prime minister of the self-proclaimed Republic of Serb Krajina, and even though convicted without the right to appeal, he took part in the 1994 negotiations between rebel Serbs and Croatian officials in Zagreb.
After the assassination of Serb Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic, Mikelic was arrested on suspicion of having participated in the preparation of the assassination. Then Serbian Justice Minister Vladan Batic said Mikelic would not be extradited to Croatia.
The Serbian Supreme Court released him three months later.
