Mesic was asked by the press in the central coastal town of Zadar to comment on a report Defence Minister Berislav Roncevic presented in Parliament today.
Roncevic said the equipping of the Armed Forces was proceeding at a pace that did not ensure appropriate and timely modernisation. He added the equipment was obsolete and in most cases incompatible with NATO standards and interoperability requirements.
Mesic said its equipment and weaponry made the Croatian army capable of defending the country's territorial integrity.
"Clearly, our equipment and weaponry come from the (1990s) Homeland War. We don't have sophisticated equipment but equipment depends on how much money we have. Neither I nor the General Staff are the ones deciding what has to be bought for the Croatian Army. This is decided by the Government and Parliament," the President said.
