Briefing STA about what he said in Luxembourg, Vajgl said Croatia's unilateral proclamation of a protected ecological and fisheries zone in the Adriatic and the incidents at sea showed that Croatia disregarded effective and transparent regional cooperation.
He said Croatia must act by the standards of the European policy, avoid radicalism, incidents, and the nationalistic homogenisation of its citizens.
STA said Vajgl raised the issue during a debate on future EU enlargement. He stated that Slovenia had until now always advocated the enlargement to include the Balkan states, as well as Croatia, given that it was in Slovenia's long-term interest.
Vajgl said Croatia had failed to settle the outstanding border issue with Slovenia by consensus, through dialogue and in the European manner, despite Slovenia's efforts, and mentioned a border deal initialled in 2001 by the two countries' then prime ministers which he said Croatia had still not ratified.
Vajgl went on to say that Croatia had opted for the creation of new facts which led to incidents, with the intention to create the impression that arbitration was the only way to settle the border issue. He added it was too early for arbitration, which he said would take too long, reiterating that Croatia must act in accordance with standards expected of a future EU member.
STA said Vajgl expected Europe to understand why Slovenia had raised this issue at today's meeting.
Vajgl said Croatia did not lead a modern, compromise-oriented European foreign policy, which he added implied respect for neighbouring states' legitimate interests.
He also said that initially, the new Slovene government would not significantly alter its policy towards Croatia.
Vajgl told STA his address before the EU foreign ministers had been received positively.
