President Stjepan Mesic said "police must not be burdened with daily politics". "Democracy in each country is also measured by the level of professionalism of its public services," Mesic said.
He also commented on traffic safety, stressing that apart from crime, to jeopardise traffic safety was the most dangerous social occurrence.
Mesic said Croatian police needed to complete the process of adjusting their activities to contemporary European criteria.
Minister Mlinaric said that everything had been done to secure peaceful and safe life to Croatian citizens.
"Adopting European standards and values and their implementation is one of the fundamental guidelines of the development of Croatian police," the minister said.
He said a department for European integration, peace missions and international relations would be set up and added that CARDS programmes and other projects provided a significant financial assistance for its establishment.
