The establishment of the centre of this kind was moved by the government and the opposition Croatian Party of Rights (HSP).
Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said the purpose of the government's motion was to strengthen the Sabor's declaration which says that the Homeland Defence War was a just and liberating war.
She added that it was sad that it was still not known how many victims had been buried in 10 mass graves during the 1990s war in Croatia.
HSP leader Anto Djapic said his party had urged setting up such a centre in 1998 as it could have helped persons indicted by the Hague-based UN war crimes tribunal.
Slaven Letica of the HSP club said that documents on the Homeland Defence War was used selectively, for the promotion of some individuals and for daily political goals.
Other clubs in the Sabor agreed that the establishment of the centre was necessary so as to conduct expert and scientific research on the topic and prevent the dissemination of lies on the topic.
