ZAGREB, Sept 15 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader told deputies in parliament on Wednesday that the government had forwarded a letter to the president of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) requesting additional explanations as to the reasons that affected the tribunal's decision to deny release pending trial to generals Mladen Markac and Ivan Cermak.

"We want to know why the tribunal has made such a decision, the more so as it recently released six Bosnian Croats," Sanader said in parliament during question time.

The PM said the justice minister would soon request a meeting with the ICTY president and the chief prosecutor, after which the parliament and the public would be informed about the reasons for the decision.

The reasons must be serious, considering previous announcements that the generals would be granted provisional release, Sanader said.

The PM stressed the government would continue to insist that Markac and Cermak be released pending trial.

Sanader said the government was unpleasantly surprised with the tribunal's decision of yesterday, given that it had done everything to ensure the generals' provisional release.

He said the news was all the more shocking as chief war crimes prosecutor Carla del Ponte informed the tribunal that she was not opposed to the generals' provisional release.
