Croatian justice minister says implementation of reforms needs time

Autor: itom
ZAGREB, April 12 (Hina) - The situation in the judiciary cannot change overnight, however, many good decisions have been made in the last three years, and their implementation required time, Croatian Justice Minister Drazen Bosnjakovic said at a business lunch organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Zagreb on Tuesday.

He briefed the participants in this event about Croatia's achievements in the reform of the judiciary and about efforts Croatia is taking to meet benchmarks for closing the policy area No. 23 "Judiciary and Fundamental Rights" as part of Croatia's European Union accession negotiations.

"The future of the judiciary is today much better and I have no doubts that we will manage to reach standards of developed countries," the minister said at the lunch held in the Westin Hotel in Zagreb.

Bosnjakovic spoke about measures taken to strengthen the network of courts, attract new investments and combat corruption.

He said that 40 percent of small courts had been closed or added to bigger courts. In the first quarter of 2011, Croatian courts settled 14,000 cases out of 84,000 cases older than three years adding that the backlog cases would be cleared in the coming two years.

He said private distrainers would start operating in 2012, which would render distress procedures faster,

Commenting on the ongoing anti-corruption campaign, the minister pointed out that the credibility and seriousness of this drive was proved by proceedings launched against high-profile officials.

It is important for citizens to see that nobody is untouchable, he said.

In attendance at the business lunch was also U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, James Foley.
