ZAGREB, Aug 15(Hina) - Croatian potholers have discovered and
investigated a pit on Mount Velebit deep 582 metres which, although not the
deepest in Croatia, is the pit with the deepest uninterrupted vertical in the
world, according to a statement from the Velebit Student Potholing Society from
Zagreb. The pit is located in the Rozanski Kukovi Nature Reserve on Mount
Velebit. After the first 62 metres, the remaining 516 metres represent a unique
vertical hole whose maximum width is 30 metres, Ana Sutlovic-Baksic has told
Hina.
The bottom of the pit consists of smaller lakes in which the potholers
have discovered a colony of eight underground leeches, the most numerous ever
discovered underground.
