The main theme, "Support to Media in Conflict Areas and in Countries
in Transition", will be discussed at an international conference due
to open at the Sava Centre on Monday.
At the conference, UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura will
present this year's UNESCO "Guillermo Cano" World Press Freedom Award
to a representative of Cuban journalist and poet Raul Rivero
Castaneda, who has been serving his 20-year prison sentence in Cuba
since 2003.
On the first day of the celebration, an exhibition of photographs
awarded at the 2003 World Press Photo Competition was staged. A total
of 4,176 press photographers from 124 countries participated in the
contest, contributing 63,093 photos.
A regional conference on "Media in Post-Conflict and Transition
Countries", organised by UNESCO and the OSCE Mission to Serbia and
Montenegro, is scheduled for Tuesday.
