Tomcic also openly thanked Koprivnica County Prefect Josip Friscic and
the Croatian Peasant Alliance chief, Ivan Kolar, as well as others for
what he said was their determination to oppose a possible coalition
with the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) after the HDZ won the
parliamentary elections. In this context Tomcic said that the
coalition with the HDZ had been proposed by some HSS representatives
in other Croatian counties in which the HSS had achieved poor election
results and the coalition with the election's winner was seen by them
as the way to remain in power for their own advantages.
Commenting on the situation in the country and on the foreign affairs,
Tomcic said that the national economic development was of key
importance for Croatia.
He went on to say that he was not a Euro-sceptic as some media were
tying to brand him. He, however, insists that negotiations which will
ensue on Croatia's candidacy for the membership in the European Union
after the European Commission gives its opinion (avis) on the
country's application are more important than the avis itself.
It is necessary to reach a united national position on unacceptable
allegations in indictments issued by the UN war crimes tribunal
against Croatian generals, such as that "Croatia was founded on crimes
and that it was an aggressor in Bosnia-Herzegovina", Tomcic told the
party gathering.
