Since the late 1990s, Italy has set up similar committees in central
and south-eastern European countries, with the aim of strengthening
economic, industrial and financial cooperation with them through
stronger ties with the private sector.
Italy accounts for over 20 percent of Croatia's entire foreign trade.
In 2000, Italy became Croatia's most important trade partner.
According to the national Bureau of Statistics, Croatia's export to
Italy rose by 46.2 percent to 1.6 billion dollars in 2003, while the
import rose by 39.5 percent to over 2.6 billion dollars.
