Letica, who held a news conference in the coastal city of Zadar on
Monday, said the Ivo Sanader Cabinet had high expectations in relation
to an official opinion which the European Commission would give on
Croatia's EU membership application.
He went on to say that he personally and the HSP did not expect too
much of the opinion (the so-called avis) of the EC, and that the only
advantage would be that foreign investments could be easer attracted
if Croatia became an official candidate for the EU.
Asked by reporters about possible terrorist attacks in Croatia, Letica
said that he did not expect terrorist threats in the country and that
he was scared more of possible cases arson than of terrorist attacks.
Asked whether it was necessary to increase powers of the President of
the Republic, Letica answered in the affirmative, and added that he
would run for Croatia's President at the next presidential elections.
The chief of the Zadar branch of the HSP, Danijel Kotlar, condemned
the recent attack on a Serb returnee, Nikola Javor, in the village of
Zemunik Gornji, and also slammed attempts of some political parties to
politicise this case.
