Guesting in a Croatian Television afternoon talk show, Zuzul said
Croatia would not sign the agreement as long as non-signing it was the
European Union's position. The U.S. has made the continuation of
military aid to some countries conditional on the signing of the
agreement.
Zuzul went on to say that he would not propose sending Croatian troops
to Iraq, which he added was not a good idea at present.
Speaking about fugitive Croatian General Ante Gotovina, who is wanted
by the Hague war crimes tribunal, the minister said Gotovina was a
hero who played an important part in the 1990s war. He added, however,
that heroes too could make mistakes and do bad things and that these
were "complex issues".
Zuzul dismissed criticism that he is too much U.S-oriented, saying his
orientation was pro-European but that at the same time he advocated
having good relations with the U.S.
Speaking of his cooperation with President Stjepan Mesic in the field
of foreign policy, Zuzul said it was good and added he was against
changing constitutional provisions regulating the powers individual
segments of the authorities have in the creation of Croatia's foreign
policy.
