A round table debate, organised on this topic in Zagreb on Tuesday,
pooled government officials, NGO representatives and independent
experts.
The head of the trade union of workers in the commercial sector, Ana
Knezevic, spoke about the difficult position of women employed in
shops, claiming that their employment was more and more like slavery.
Women account for over 75 percent of the total number of employees in
this sector, and most of them work in retail shops. The employees in
shops work between 58 and 94 hours weekly, while the law stipulates
that there should be 40 working hours per week. What is worse, they
are not paid for overtime, Knezevic said.
If employers begin abiding by law, an additional 25,000 jobs could be
created in the commercial sector. Although the trade union several
times warned relevant institutions about the violation of rights of
workers, there is no progress in this area, Knezevic said.
