ZAGREB, Feb 18 (Hina) - Applications for the post of Croatian Radio and
Television (HRT) general director were invited in the daily press on
Wednesday and they are to be submitted in the next 14 days.#L#
The general director should be appointed 45 days from the completion
of the application procedure at the latest and he/she will be
appointed by secret ballot by the HRT Programmes Council.
Although under the current Law on the HRT the general director is
elected for a period of four years, the duration of his/her mandate,
and possibly his/her election, will depend on changes to the law on
which the Culture Ministry has already started working. The government
is dissatisfied with the current procedure of election of members of
the Programmes Council, who are appointed by the parliament from
among candidates of institutions and non-government associations.
Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor has announced that the new law
would clearly define which institutions and associations represent the
interested expert and other public which must be represented in the
Council, after which those institutions would independently nominate
their candidates. Kosor has said the law could create the possibility
for several parliamentary deputies to sit on the Council, but their
number should not have significant influence on the Council's work.
Kosor said the draft law could be forwarded to parliament at the end
of March, namely before the application procedure for the HRT general
director is completed.
