In an attempt to smear Stepinac's reputation in the public, the then
Communist regime forged trial transcripts and distributed them in the
public, Glavina said and added that despite the then secret service
(UDBA), people found ways to spread the truth about Stepinac's heroic
behaviour before the communist court.
"For my beliefs I am prepared not only to be laughed at, despised and
humiliated, but, because my conscience is clear, I am also prepared to
day at any time. The Croatian people voted for their country through a
plebiscite, and I would be a villain if I wouldn't be able to sense
the puls of the Croatian people who slaves in the former Yugoslavia,"
Stepinac said before the communist court in Zagreb in 1946.
The Yugoslav Communist regime prosecuted Stepinac because he refused
to separate the Catholic Church in Croatia from the Holy See, Juraj
Batelja said.
Cardinal Stepinac's speech was published by the HKZ-Hrvatsko Slovo
publishing house.
