SINJ/HRVACE, Jan 28(Hina) - The 11th anniversary of the liberation of
the Peruca water power plant and dam from Croatian rebel Serb forces
was marked in the southern village of Hrvace on Wednesday.#L#
The plant and all surrounding villages in Hrvace municipality were
liberated on 28 January 1993 by the Croatian Army's (HV) 126th Brigade
and 16th Home Guard Regiment. A member of the 126th Brigade, Ante
Buljan, was killed in the operation.
The Serb forces held this important facility and the entire Hrvace
municipality under occupation since the start of the Homeland War.
Before they were pushed back, Serb forces managed to activate 30 tons
of explosive planted on the dam, with more than 500 million cubic
metres of water in the reservoir lake. A catastrophe was prevented
thanks to a fast and successful intervention of HV engineering units,
Croatian Power Company workers and construction workers from Sinj, who
had prepared the necessary machines, but the explosion caused serious
damage to the dam.
Reconstruction works on the dam started immediately after the facility
was liberated and today it is two metres higher, which has increased
the capacity of the reservoir lake by 25 million cubic metres to 565
million cubic metres.
