BELGRADE, Jan 27(Hina) - Mirko Vojnovic, who is accused of war crimes committed by Serb forces near the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar in 1991, attempted suicide on Tuesday, a Belgrade radio station reported.

Vojnovic underwent an operation in Novi Sad on 23 January, after which
he was treated in a local hospital. When he was left alone in his
hospital room on Tuesday, he jumped off the second floor of the
hospital building, sustaining serious injuries. He is now at the
intensive care unit, a judge of the war crimes court in Belgrade,
Miroslav Alimpic, was quoted by the Radio B92 as saying.
Vojnovic is one of eight indictees whom the war crimes court in
Belgrade accused of killing at least 192 Croatian prisoners of war at
the Ovcara farm outside Vukovar on 20 and 21 November 1991.
The trial is scheduled to start on 9 March.
