of Croatians celebrated the start of 2004 with fireworks displays and
parties in the open air, organised in squares of major cities and

Local authorities organised New Year Eve's parties in main squares in
Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split, Rijeka, Osijek and other towns in Croatia.
The largest party in the open featuring national pop stars and
promising talents was organised in Square Ban Jelacic in Zagreb where
70.000 revellers gathered. The six-hour programme cost about one
million kuna, and of this sum, 600,000 kuna was allocated from the
city's budget.
Several tens of thousands of Split citizens gathered in Prokurativa
and Riva where local pop groups and singers participated in the
entertainment programme. The party in the open was filmed and the
material will be used for a film which is going to be directed by
Arsen Ostojic.
Several thousand Osijek citizens gathered in the Tvrdja Square to
celebrate the start of the new year.
The festivities in the southern resort of Dubrovnik gathered over
15,000 revellers.
The northern Adriatic seaport of Rijeka organised New Year Eve's Party
in its main square.
The police reported no major incident.
