The agreement defines criteria for obtaining Bosnian and Croatian citizenships and confirms the right to dual citizenship of those who obtained it before the agreement was adopted.
The document is of outstanding importance for the numerous Croats who reside in Bosnia but have Croatian citizenship because under the Bosnian citizenship act they risked losing Bosnian citizenship.
Bosnian citizens lose Bosnian citizenship if they acquire the citizenship of a country with which Bosnia and Herzegovina has not signed a dual citizenship agreement.
Bosnia already has a nearly identical such agreement with Serbia and Montenegro.
State Presidency member Sulejman Tihic told the press it had been decided that the agreement should be signed by either Prime Minister Ivo Miro Jovic or Civil Affairs Minister Safet Halilovic, depending on who will sign it on Croatia's behalf.
