ZAGREB/BRUSSELS, Dec 5 (Hina) - The European Commission is very
pleased that Croatia has fully harmonised its new Government Subsidies Act with
the acquis communautaire, the chief Croatian negotiator for the area of market
competition said in Brussels on Monday after talks with EU officials as part
of the second phase of screening, an in-depth analysis of the level of
adjustment of Croatian legislation to that of the EU. "Today's
screening phase started off in a good atmosphere because we told the European
Commission that several weeks ago the Croatian Parliament had adopted a new law
on government subsidies that fully conforms to the acquis communautaire," Olga
Spevec said, adding that the law would take effect on Tuesday.
"The European Commission is very pleased that Croatia has followed its
advice and recommendations that the law should be fully adjusted to the
acquis," she added.
Spevec noted that the law was temporary in that it would be in force
until Croatia's accession to the EU, when the supervision of government
subsidies would fall within the authority of the European Commission or a
market competition commission.
The talks continue on Tuesday, and Spevec said that only 25% of the
talks had been completed.
