ZAGREB, Nov 27(Hina) - The launching of Croatia's European Union entry negotiations equally fills Croats with hope, indifference and distrust, according to the results of a poll conducted by the GfK agency.

Twenty-seven per cent of those interviewed said the negotiations filled them with hope. These were mainly older people, with university education, men, and people with high monthly wages.

Twenty-five per cent, mainly women, were indifferent, while 26 per cent expressed distrust, mainly inhabitants of northern Croatia and men over 34.

Thirty per cent expressed hope Croatia would prosper economically after joining the EU.

Every fifth Croatian was afraid of economic dependency upon accession to the Union, while 19 per cent were also afraid of loss of identity.

In the near future 39 per cent still saw themselves as citizens of Croatia, 37 per cent saw themselves as Croatian citizens first and EU citizens second, while only two per cent saw themselves as EU citizens first and Croatian citizens second. Only one per cent saw themselves as only Europeans in the near future.

Those hoping for economic prosperity were city inhabitants (32 per cent), inhabitants of the Slavonia region (33 per cent), aged 45-64 (34-39 per cent), and people with university education and the highest monthly wages (38 per cent).

Slavonia inhabitants feared greater economic dependency the most (27 per cent), as did those in the 35-44 age group (28 per cent).

Those who saw themselves only as Croatian citizens were the most numerous among people above 65 (51 per cent) and those with low education.

Inhabitants of Slavonia and Dalmatia saw themselves as Croatian citizens first and EU citizens second (43 per cent), as did those with university education (50 per cent).

GfK conducted the poll in November on people above 15.
