Closing the event, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic highlighted the connection between science and research and the economy and political activity.
"The Republic of Croatia and the European Union, of which Croatia will soon become a member, are committed to their fundamental goal, an economy founded on knowledge and a sustainable society," he said.
Mesic supported the WAAS and its efforts for the annihilation of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction.
Participants addressed ownership of results of scientific research, the limits of genetics, demography, the culture of peace and security, human responsibility for evolution, employment in the global society of knowledge, the future of money, and globalisation in relation to human rights and the rule of law.
This was the first WAAS general assembly to be held in Southeast Europe and the first held in Europe in a long time.
WAAS was established in 1960 and has about 500 members, prominent individuals whose work is relevant on the global scale. Among its founders were Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer and several Nobel prize winners. Seven of its members are Croats and Mesic was the first statesman admitted into membership.
