The honorary degree was presented to Mesic on Tuesday.
The Tuzla University Senate decided to award the honorary doctorate to Mesic for the promotion of peace, tolerance and cooperation among peoples and states in southeast and central Europe as well as universal values, the university said in a statement.
Thanking the university for the award, Mesic said Tuzla was a multicultural, multi-confessional, multiethnic town which did not recognise intolerance or discrimination on any basis.
The Croatian president advocated the further advancing of regional cooperation among former Yugoslav countries. "We have a shared Yugoslav history, but we will also have a shared European future," Mesic said.
The Croatian head of state also visited the Franciscan St. Peter and Paul's Monastery and the St. Francis Catholic School Centre in Tuzla.
