Kajin told a news conference in the coastal city of Rijeka on Tuesday that he based his claims on a draft agreement which Croatia is planning to sign with Austria on this matter and on announcements from diplomatic circles about the same procedure with Italy.
The IDS official recalled that the former federal Yugoslavia, of which Croatia used to be a member, had agreed with Italy on the compensation for war damage to the so-called optants -- ethnic Italians -- who fled the then Yugoslavia and moved to Italy.
On the other hand, no agreement of this kind was ever signed with Austria, he added.
According to Kajin, a possible agreement with Austria will cover tens of thousands of houses and other buildings, mainly in the eastern region of Slavonia and Zagreb, which were owned by Austrians.
Kajin said that the Croatian government should not negotiate anything in relation to the compensation of nationalised property without engaging local self-government units in such talks.
He went on to say that Zagreb would have to ensure billions of euros for this purpose which he said might undermine the stability of Croatian public companies.
Kajin predicted that after Austria and Italy, similar agreements would be signed with Germany, the United States, Israel and Slovenia whose citizens used to have property in Croatia.
