UNMOGIP was founded in January 1949 and Croatia joined this peace mission in August 2002.
Currently there are seven Croatian military observers in UNMOGIP, with Brigadier Tomislav Pavicic being deputy commander of the UNMOGIP operation.
The dispute between India and Pakistan over the status of the states of Jammu and Kashmir arose soon after India gained independence and was divided in 1947. In June 1949, an agreement signed in Karachi established the demarcation line, and conflicts between India and Pakistan flared up in 1971. An agreement signed in 1972 determined a new demarcation line between the two countries.
A total of 35 members of the Croatian Armed Forces are currently deployed in ten UN peace missions -- six in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), seven in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), seven in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), two in Western Sahara (MINURSO) and Cyprus (UNIFCYP) each, three in Liberia (UNMIL), three in Sudan (UNMIS) one in Haiti (MINUSTAH), thee in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and one in Georgia (UNOMIG).
