ZAGREB, July 14 (Hina) - Croatian parliamentary parties on
Thursday supported proposed amendments to the Farmland Act, with opposition
parties criticising the government for not drawing up the amendments earlier in
order to prevent the use of state-owned farmland by local tycoons.
The amendments aim to speed up procedure for the adoption of programmes
regulating the use of state-owned farmland. The proposal says that unless
municipal or town councils adopt such a programme by September 30 that would be
done by county authorities.
The Ministry of Agriculture was urged to set up a commission to look
into and prevent cases of state-owned farmland being used by local tycoons, who
unlawfully plant various crops to make profit.
