Marendic served as head of the Office for the Implementation of the Succession Project since 1993. From 1991 to 1992 he was an adviser to the prime minister, and in 1992 he became a Croatian representative at the International Conference on the former Yugoslavia. Towards the end of 1997 the Croatian government appointed him co-chairman of the Croatian-Yugoslav commission in charge of normalising relations between the two countries.
