Expressing his party's reservations, Damir Kajin of the IDS quoted columnist Ivan Zvonimir Cicak as saying in Jutarnji List daily that in the late 1980s Marijan had sentenced Dobroslav Paraga for verbal offence in one of the last political trials in Croatia. Kajin said that Marijan had also sentenced journalist Salih Zvizdic for reporting that Serbian writer Momo Kapor had participated in a Chetnik orgy in the United States and cited several other verdicts passed by Marijan which he described as contentious.
Marijan's candidacy was supported by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Croatian People's Party (HNS). The two parties said more power and responsibility should be given to the Supreme Court in the implementation of the justice reform. Other parliamentary parties did not voice their opinion about Marijan's appointment today.
Deputies also ended a debate on the government-sponsored bill of amendments to the Law on Elementary Education which started yesterday.
