The public relations office of the Italians carabiniers said it possessed no information on the arrest of Gotovina in the town of Castello di Cisterna near the southern city of Naples.
Ambassador Kraljevic said that he would have certainly be notified if the Italian police had arrested a Croatian general, particularly if the arrested person is wanted by the UN war crimes tribunal.
A representative of the police in Castello di Cisterna, a town with some 4,000 citizens, said he also had no information about the alleged arrest.
Croatian Army General Ante Gotovina has been on the run ever since the Hague-based tribunal (ICTY) issued an indictment against him in June 2001.
