After adopting the statute, the president of the Zala County Assembly, Zoltan Bodog Kiss, was elected president of the Euro-region. Kiss announced the expansion of cooperation to other border counties in Croatia, notably Virovitica and Koprivnica counties.
Members of the Euro-region intend to draw up projects to seek funds from the EU's Interreg programme worth eight million euros, Kiss said. The projects include the construction of a bridge over the Mura river between Murakeresztur in Hungary and Kotoriba in Medjimurje County, as well as the establishment of cross-border nature parks.
Medjimurje County deputy prefect Josip Posavec, who attended the signing of the statute, said his county would work towards developing good neighbourly relations and economic cooperation.
The third signatory to the statute, Istvan Gyenesei, president of the Somogy County Assembly, said that despite the existing need, he would oppose the construction of hydroelectric power plants on the Mura and Drava to preserve the two rivers.
