ZAGREB, April 1 (Hina) - The election monitoring nongovernmental
organisation GONG said in Friday's press release that important laws on local
and regional government were once again being changed just prior to elections,
and that because of short time terms and lack of money the education of
citizens prior to local polls had been brought into question. GONG
wrote to Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, requesting that the government co-finance
the education campaign, notably the production of TV spots and printing of
brochures for newspapers to the total amount of 260,000 kuna. GONG maintains
this is the only way to educate citizens.
The press release, signed by GONG president Suzana Jasic, said the NGO
had prepared a plan for the education campaign and tried to raise money, but
was having trouble because of increasingly fewer foreign donors and a lack of
interest among domestic ones.
