At its 58th session in December 2003, the UN General Assembly declared the 2005-2015 period the international water decade, starting today, on World Water Day, under the slogan "Water for Life".
In terms of water resources, Croatia is one of the 30th richest countries in the world and it is third in Europe with 32,818 cubic metres of renewable water sources per capita, professor Darko Mayer of Zagreb's Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering has told Hina.
With regard to drinking water, Croatian citizens are in an enviable position because they drink tap water.
Seventy-five percent of the country's population drink tap water that is controlled and safe, so there is no need to buy bottled water, Zeljko Dadic of the Croatian Public Health Agency has said.
There have been no serious epidemics caused by water in Croatia for many years, Dadic has said.
