The workshop was organised with the aim of researching the effects of defence-related diplomatic activities (international military cooperation) on changes in the defence policies of Central and South-East European countries and the implementation of new NATO initiatives, especially in cooperation with the countries of the Mediterranean Dialogue, a NATO programme launched in 1994.
The workshop was attended by some 50 scientists and experts on defence policy from Great Britain, Croatia, NATO, neighbouring Central and South-East European countries, and countries participating in the Mediterranean Dialogue (Jordan, Egypt, Israel, and Algeria).
