Cargo transport between Croatia and Slovenia is a bilateral matter and does not fall within the jurisdiction of the European Commission. The EC therefore recommends bilateral talks, sources from the EC Press Room told the Slovene news agency STA on Thursday.

EC representatives declined to interpret regulations which served as the basis for Slovenia's decision to radically restrict possibilities for Croatian truck drivers and drivers from non-EU members to transport cargo from Slovenia to other European Union member states. EC representatives only said that "being a member state, Slovenia is bound to implement the legal system of the Union".

The heads of the chambers of trades in Croatia and Slovenia on Thursday sent an open letter to their respective prime ministers, Ivo Sanader and Janez Jansa, urging them to immediately reach agreement on the issue.
