The aim of the initiative is to give children living in children's homes an opportunity to grow up in foster families. Growing up in a family is given preference to care for children provided in orphanages, according to the UN convention on children's rights.
In 18 homes run by the ministry, there are 1,598 children, and 105 of them are under the age of three. An additional 2,343 children are accommodated with foster families in Croatia. These figures were presented at a news conference in Zagreb on Friday at which UNICEF and ministry representatives spoke about the initiative.
