The incumbent President Stjepan Mesic won 1,454,252 votes, or 65.93 per cent, while his rival, Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) gained 751,626 votes, or 34.07 per cent. 35,610 ballots, or 1.59 per cent, were declared invalid.
A total of 101,425 out of 387,258 voters, or 26.19 per cent, voted abroad. Kosor captured 82.56 per cent of their votes and Mesic 17.44 per cent.
DIP chairman Ivica Crnic said that despite the fact that the second round of voting would be repeated at two polling stations the election process would be completed by February 18 when the incumbent president's term expires.
Speaking at a press conference in Zagreb, Crnic said that the DIP could not declare the election results official until voting was repeated in Sibenik and Grebastica Donja on January 23 and the deadlines for complaints expired.
If there are no complaints within 48 hours of the repetition of the election, official results may be announced on January 26, he added.
Crnic recalled that all 13 candidates who ran in the presidential race were required to submit their reports on campaign funding within the next two weeks, and that the DIP would make them public eight days after the expiry of that deadline.
