ZAGREB, Jan 16 (Hina) - Upon his arrival in the building of the
Croatian Journalists' Association (HND) on Sunday evening, where his election
team gathered waiting for the first preliminary results of the presidential
run-off, President Stjepan Mesic said he would "ask Prime Minister Ivo Sanader
to explain certain statements made during the election campaign"."There are several persons, including the Prime Minister, who will have
to explain their statements," Mesic said, answering the question by a reporter
whether Mesic expected the continuation of good cooperation with the Sanader
cabinet.
"An election campaign can be conducted in a confirmatory way, one can
criticise rivals, but one must not lie, which happened this time," Mesic
said.
Commenting on Sanader's assessment that the campaign was restrained,
Mesic said this was "a dirty rather than a restrained campaign".
Asked whether he would recommend a government reshuffle, Mesic said he
was not authorised to do that.
