ZAGREB, Nov 28 (Hina) - An agreement regulating Croatia's right to export 180,000 tonnes of sugar to the European Union market annually was signed in Zagreb on Tuesday.

The document was signed by Croatian Agriculture Minister Petar Cobankovic and the head of the European Commission's delegation in Zagreb, Vincent Degert.

The treaty, which has become a part of the Croatia-EU Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA), determines the quota of 180,000 tonnes of sugar which Croatia can export to the Union with a preferential import quota of 80,000 tonnes from the EU.

So far, the SAA has made it possible for Croatia to export unlimited amounts without any tariffs to the European Union. However, this had to be changed due to the reform of the EU sugar market. During recent negotiations on the introduction of export quotas, Croatia succeeded in ensuring high quotas based on the highest average annual exports in recent years.

Both Cobankovic and Degert welcomed the deal, which was the result of eight-month-long negotiations.

The EC official added that by this agreement Croatia was also preparing for the joint agricultural policy of the 25-member European bloc.
