TIRANA, Nov 24 (Hina) - The Central European Initiative (CEI), as the oldest regional association in Central Europe, is very important because of its European component and because many of its members have become EU members over time, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader told reporters in Tirana on Friday.

Sanader, who was attending the annual summit of the CEI, told Croatian reporters that all speakers at the summit supported Croatia's bid to join the EU and presented a joint position that all countries in the region should be admitted once they met EU membership criteria.

Sanader said that Croatia supported the expansion of the EU to all European countries so that Europe could stop being a place of divisions and wars and become a place of well-being for all citizens.

Sanader said that EU officials had commended Croatian officials conducting membership negotiations with the EU and said that few countries had such good negotiators.

The PM welcomed the resolution of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee which states that Croatia deserves to become an EU member and that its admission will not be a burden for the EU's integration capacity.

Although it was planned as a meeting of 18 CEI prime ministers, the Tirana summit is attended only by the prime ministers of Albania, Austria, Croatia, Hungary and Macedonia, while other CEI countries sent deputy prime ministers or foreign ministers. The summit is held behind closed doors.
